So far, the R-rated, raunchy adaptation of the classic series has scored a weak 19 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, averaged from the 108 reviews available, but fans have flooded Johnson's Twitter with unwavering support.
"Yay positive upticks," Johnson tweeted Thursday. "Fans LOVE the movie. Critics HATE it. What a glaring disconnect. People just want to laugh & have fun."
Johnson took the negative reviews in stride, insisting there's just a big "big disconnect" between critics and moviegoers: "Oh boy, critics had their venom & knives ready. Fans LOVE the movie. Huge positive scores."
Despite the low rating and mostly negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, some critics did respond well to the reboot.
"Bold move from this critic who watched #Baywatch w/ other critics who laughed their ass off, but then they decide to trash it publicly," Johnson tweeted in response to a critic named Dewey Singleton, who originally praised the actor in a tweet that read, "As a critic i call out other critics and tell you why the @TheRock and @baywatchmovie are worth your time."
But in the same thread, a blogger gave her honest opinion of what she saw unfolding in the screening she attended with the press.
"No one in my screening laughed but two people. Just two. I really wanted the fun...and it lacked it despite Dwayne's charm and Zac's abs."
"Wow just two? Really?" Johnson responded. "Odd because fans are loving it. Clearly you're the wrong audience for a raunchy rated R film. Sorry bout that!"
