Rock Fans Mourn The Death of Allman Brothers Band Frontman Gregg Allman

The musician passed away in his home in Savannah surrounded by his family and friends, manager Michael Lehman told CNN. His death was due to complications from liver cancer which stemmed from a 2010 liver transplant.

“Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years,” a statement on Allman's Facebook page said. “During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.”

Lehman said, “I have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a brilliant pioneer in music. He was a kind and gentle soul with the best laugh I ever heard. His love for his family and bandmates was passionate as was the love he had for his extraordinary fans. Gregg was an incredible partner and an even better friend. We will all miss him.”

Allman will be buried at Rose Hill cemetery in Macon, Georgia, where two other Allman Brothers members — his brother, guitarist Duane Allman, and bassist Berry Oakley — are also buried.

The legend's death was met with emotional reactions from musicians and celebrities on social media, including Cher who was briefly married to Allman in the 1970s.
