The Met Gala may be the most fashionable event of the year, but not everyone loves -- or is allowed -- to attend.
Despite her popular fashion brand, RHONY's Rebecca Minkoff has never been invited to the Met Gala and she speculates it's because she broke one of Anna Wintour's rules. On the Two T's in a Pod podcast, Minkoff shared she once got in the same elevator as Wintour, adding, "That was the end of my relationship with Anna. You’re not allowed in the elevator with Anna." She said the situation became worse when she tried to make small talk and was left with an "awkward" silence," before adding, "Maybe that's why I've never been invited to the Met Gala."
"I had a terrible experience," Demi Lovato told Billboard about the 2016 Met Gala. "This one celebrity was a complete bitch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink." She went to an AA meeting straight from the event and criticized attendees as “fake and sucking the fashion industry’s dick."
Jennifer Garner hasn't returned to the Met Gala since attending back in 2007. In Vogue's Beauty Secret series, the actress opened up about her experience, saying, "I found it a little scary, so I haven't been back." That being said, she added she had a "majestic and special" evening attending as Valentino's date.
Lizzo complained after making her Met Gala debut in 2022 that the fashion event was “really stingy with the liquor,” that there was “heckling” from photogs about her flute performance and said the wait lines for everything were way too long. However, that didn’t keep the pop queen from attending the costume party again this year.
Priyanka Chopra appeared on GMA a few days after the Met Gala and revealed the one complaint she had about the event: "The Met's always like, so much work for just that carpet moment...But..I have a complaint. There was no bread for dinner. No bread for dinner, I was so hungry after." She then went on to reveal Nick Jonas’ solution: "My husband ordered pizza by the time we got back to the hotel, so we were fine.” However, she quickly regretted being so candid, “There goes my invite for next year."
Sza says she "snuck out the back as soon as Lenny Kravitz hit the stage because I was feeling very like, 'Whoa, my anxiety's going crazy.'" The artist said, per Finish Line Women's Community Voices series, "So much so that I couldn't walk down the main steps to exit. I took a cab. I walked like three city blocks with no shoes on…"
After attending in 2021, Lourdes Leon said that while she was "really grateful" she was able to go, "You're just shoved into a room with all these famous people and you're supposed to talk to them and be their friend, even though you don't f---ing know them. That's not my vibe." She added: ""I'm sure it's fun if you're someone who is friends with a lot of famous people, but I'm not. I didn't know who the f--- to talk to. I felt so awkward that I literally called my boyfriend in the middle of it."
After attending the Met Gala with then-girlfriend Gigi Hadid in 2016, Zayn Malik told GQ two years later, "Now, it's not something I would go to. I'd rather be sitting at my house, doing something productive, than dressing up in really expensive clothes and being photographed on a red carpet...To do the self-indulgent 'look at me, I'm amazing' thing on the red carpet, it's not me."
"I don't like it," Amy Schumer told Howard Stern about attending in 2016. "I have no interest in fashion. I like the idea of coming up with a way to dress that’s more comfortable, that looks cool, that sounds good to me. But other than that, I don't care." She added the whole experience felt "like punishment," saying "it's people doing an impression of having a conversation … I don't like the farce. We're dressed up like a bunch of f--king a--holes." She still attended again in 2017.
Speaking with Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham said, "You and I were literally sitting across from each other at the Met Ball, and it was like a crazy countdown to when we could escape." She also called out Odell Beckham Jr., saying, "it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards … I was like, 'This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.'" She still attended the year after making this statement.
"I'm never going again. It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all. I'm never going again," Gwyneth Paltrow said in 2013 … before attending again in 2017 and 2019.
"It is such a jerk parade," Tina Fey told David Letterman in 2015. "If you had a million arms and all the people you would punch in the whole world, they're all there." She hasn't attended since 2010.
BANNED: Tim Gunn. While it's unclear how he feels about the event, the "Project Runway" host said he’s been disinvited for life from attending. "I was asked what is the most unforgettable thing I’ve ever seen it fashion and I said it's easy, it was watching Anna Wintour being carried down 5 flights of stairs by two bodyguards from a fashion show. All hell broke loose," he said, "so we've had an open war ever since."
