Stephen Colbert took it upon himself to slam Kellyanne Conway's "free commercial" for Ivanka Trump merchandise on Thursday night.
"Don't you think it should be against the rules for a White House employee to show products?" Colbert said. "Funny story, it is. There are these vague kind of rules called laws."
The "Late Show" host then referenced a law prohibiting any White House employees from endorsing products for the gain of friends, relatives or affiliates.
"Very important law," he joked. "It's been on the books for a long time. It was written after the 1882 White House endorsement of Chester A. Arthur's Mutton Chop Bangles."
After Conway shilled Trump's merchandise during a Thursday morning "Fox & Friends" segment, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer revealed that Conway had been "counseled," and naturally, Colbert had questions about the specifics of her counseling.
"What kind of counseling are we talking about, Sean?" Colbert asked. "Is it like a camp counselor? Is she working on her merit badge in ethics?"
