James Cameron is no stranger to blockbusters with "Terminator," "Titanic" and "Avatar" under his belt. But the filmmaker isn't thrilled "The Avengers" have ruled the box office this decade.
With "Avengers: Infinity War" poised to break more records for the Marvel franchise, Cameron is ready for the superhero genre to be over already.
5 Reasons Marvel Fans Are Freaking Out Over 'Avengers: Infinity War' Trailer
View Story"I'm hoping we'll start getting 'Avenger' fatigue here pretty soon," the director, who has been busy working on four "Avatar" sequels, told IndieWire on Saturday. "Not that I don't love the movies. It's just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It's like, oy!"
Cameron is clearly hoping four of those other stories are his four follow-ups to his 2009 blockbuster. Maybe he's just upset that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been dominating the box office since "Avatar" first hit screens. Of course, that's because they've been actually putting out movies, to the tune of three or four a year now. Meanwhile, a whole generation of kids is coming up that's never even heard of "Avatar." Nine years is a very long-time in the age of short attention spans.
'Black Panther' Becomes King of the Superhero Box Office as It Shatters Another Massive Record
View StoryEven as he was disparaging the runaway success of the "Avengers" franchise, Cameron admitted he wasn't completely in tune with modern moviegoers. He's been too busy turning one sequel into two and then four, but really none so far. "I would say I don't have a good sense, my finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist today because I haven't had a TV show or movie out recently. So I don't know where tastes are going in respect to science fiction."
In other words, he doesn't get it. He doesn't get why fans are flocking to superhero escapism and have been for the past decade. He's just hoping that they'll get tired of it sooner or later so they have some love left to give "Avatar 2 (of 5)," currently scheduled to hit theaters as soon as Dec. 18, 2020! "Avengers: Infinity War" hits April 27, 2018, with five more films on the slate before Cameron's first sequel gets here.
