Disney is remaking the 1998 animated classic as a live-action movie.
Disney unveiled the first image from its highly-anticipated, live-action "Mulan" movie, based on the 1998 animated classic.
On Monday afternoon, the first image of Chinese actress Liu Yifei, in character as heroine Hua Mulan, was released. Monday also marked the film's first day of production.
Yifei, a Chinese-American, won the coveted role after Disney's year-long, international search and will star alongside Donnie Yen, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An and martial artist Jet Li.
"The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet," Disney said in a statement. "When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China's greatest warriors ever."
Directed by Niki Caro and written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, "Mulan" will hit theaters in March 2020.
