Kelly Clarkson 'Begged' to Get Out of 'From Justin to Kelly,' Was 'Miserable' Filming It

"From Justin to Kelly" is one of those so bad it's good movies, but for Kelly Clarkson, making it was just plain bad.

With the release of her first starring role in a movie since -- the animated movie "UglyDolls" -- later this month, the "Voice" judge reflected on making the 2003 musical alongside Justin Guarini and why it was such a "miserable time of my life" in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Telling the publication she "just didn't believe in" the project from the start, Clarkson explained that she doesn't see herself as "a beach blanket-movie kind of girl." She also worried the movie would "ruin" the trajectory she had after winning the first season of "American Idol," — which was the whole reason she had to do the film in the first place.

"I didn't want it to deter or ruin any chance of me being able to go down the path I actually auditioned for on 'Idol,'" she said, before revealing the one concession she received from the powers that be. "They did give me this: I begged them — since I had to do it contractually — I wanted my single to be released before the movie came out and I think that literally saved my career. It was 'Miss Independent.' The fact that that was successful, I think that overcame what the movie was."

Clarkson was also asked if she had any "positive memories" from filming ... and, no, it sure doesn't seem like she does.

"It was a very miserable time of my life," she said, adding that the opportunity should have been given to someone from "Idol" who would "love" to do it.

"There were plenty of people on that show," added Clarkson. "I think I might have been the only one that didn't want to do it. But the winner had to, so. I can get over the fact that it's silly and cute — that's not embarrassing to me at all. I just don't find it very cool that somebody makes you do something that is not your passion and you don't want to do."

"From Justin to Kelly," which saw the two title stars overcoming horrible fashion choices and falling in love on Spring Break, earned only $4.9 million at the box office against a $12 million budget.
