The thrilling sci-fi/horror film sees Stewart among a group of scientists trapped seven miles beneath the surface of the ocean ... only they're not alone down there!

In space, nothing can hear you scream. Well, the same can be said for "Underwater," the new horror film with serious "Alien" vibes starring Kristen Stewart, even rocking the buzzed 'do of Sigourney Weaver's Ripley from the third film in that series.

That's not necessarily to say the film looks like a cheap knock-off of the sci-fi/horror classic, but it definitely seems to be sitting in that same genre hybrid realm. In this case, Stewart is part of a crew that takes a deep-sea mission seven miles below the ocean's surface to see what's down there. Scientists exploring. What could go wrong?

There is a sense of claustrophobia and danger throughout this trailer, as what awaits them in the deep isn't the only danger they face. That far below the surface, should their vessel -- or the underwater laboratory they call home for however long they're down there -- fail, they'll be dead within moments.

And it appears to start failing almost immediately.

Add to that the fact that there is no natural light on the floor of the ocean, and the recipe is perfectly laid out for genuine spooks and jump scares ... both of which appear plentiful in this trailer alone.

Seven miles below the ocean's surface can feel as alien and alone as the depths of outer space.

And while Stewart's Norah Price isn't alone at the start of the film, we can certainly imagine her being that way by it's end, or close to it. With lots of quick shots and spooky imagery, there look to be plenty of chills and thrills throughout the movie.

This film continues Stewart's wild and varied streak of film projects after achieving fame for her role in the critically-reviled "Twilight" films. She has attempted to shake off the association with various independent films, but now looks ready to jump back into bigger-budget fare like this film and the upcoming "Charlie's Angels" reboot.

"Underwater" also stars T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, Mamoudou Athie and John Gallagher Jr. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on January 10, 2020.
