Zooey Deschanel and Husband Divorcing After 4 Years of Marriage: 'Better Off as Friends'

Zooey Deschanel and her husband of just over four years, Jacob Pechenik, are officially over.

The "New Girl" star, 39, and producer, 47, announced their split Friday afternoon in a joint statement.

"After much discussion and a long period of contemplation we have decided we are better off as friends, business partners and co-parents rather than life partners," a rep for the couple told PEOPLE. "We remain committed to our business, our values and most of all our children. Thank you for respecting our privacy at this time."

Their last public appearance together was at the 2018 Heal The Bay's Bring Back The Beach Awards Gala in May.

Deschanel and Pechenik got married in the summer of 2015, a few months after confirming their engagement. They welcomed their first child, daughter Elsie, in July. She's now 4. The couple also shares son Charlie, 2.

Despite having similar professions (and for Deschanel, having a family history of TV and film), the actress revealed she and her husband "don't the do TV thing" with their kids.

"To them, I'm just Mom," she told PEOPLE earlier this year. "They don't really watch TV, anyway. They don't watch anything. It's basically books and coloring books and toys and stuff."

Deschanel was previously married to the lead singer of Death Cab For Cutie, Ben Gibbard.
