Her career began on Broadway in the 60s in the musical Hair, before she starred in Woody Allen's production, Play It Again Sam, with Keaton receiving a Tony nomination for her performance.
While Keaton made her film debut the next year in Lovers and Other Strangers, her breakout role was in 1972 in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, in which she played the girlfriend of Al Pacino's Michael Corleone.
In the years that followed, Keaton frequently collaborated with Allen, including in the film adaptation of Play It Again, Sam, Manhattan, Sleeper, Love and Death, and Annie Hall. For her performance in the titular role in 1977's Annie Hall, Heaton won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Keaton went on to star in many films in the subsequent decades, including many comedies and romcoms, including The First Wives Club, The Family Stone, and Book Club, and her five collaborations with Nancy Meyers, which included Something's Gotta Give, Father of the Bride, and Baby Boom.

Following the sad news of Keaton's passing, reactions began pouring in, with stars across Hollywood paying tribute to the legendary actress.
Woody Allen posted an essay following her death on The Free Press. "Unlike anyone the planet has experienced or is unlikely to ever see again, her face and laugh illuminated any space she entered," he wrote of her in his piece, before sharing his first impression of her at a 1969 audition for his play "Play It Again, Sam" by writing, "If Huckleberry Finn was a gorgeous young woman, he'd be Keaton."
"She was so charming, so beautiful, so magical, that I questioned my sanity. I thought: Could I be in love so quickly?" he continued, before saying as he started making movies, he made them "for an audience of one, Diane Keaton" -- saying her reviews were the only ones he "cared" about.
"This beautiful yokel went on to become an award-winning actress and sophisticated fashion icon. We had a few great personal years together and finally we both moved on, and why we parted only God and Freud might be able to figure out," he said of their complicated relationship, concluding his essay, "A few days ago the world was a place that included Diane Keaton. Now it's a world that does not. Hence, it's a drearier world. Still, there are her movies. And her great laugh still echoes in my head."
Keaton's Book Club co-star Jane Fonda shared a touching tribute on Instagram, writing, "It’s hard to believe...or accept…that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress."
"Diane was a really good friend of ours," wrote Henry Winkler on X. "What an extraordinary talented woman. Diane, you will be so missed on the Earth. Rest sweetly as sweet as sweet as you have been to everyone you have met. Love, Harry and Stacey."
Bette Midler -- who famously starred alongside Keaton in 1996's The First Wives Club -- mourned her late co-star's death on Instagram, writing, "The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!"
Keaton and Midler's other First Wives Club co-star, Goldie Hawn, posted a heartbreaking tribute on Instagram.
"Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you. You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination. How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to 'shut up'honey. There was, and will be, no one like you," Hawn wrote. "You stole the hearts of the world and shared your genius with millions, making films that made us laugh and cry in ways only you could. I was blessed to make First Wives Club with you, our days starting with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking, right through to the very last day of filming. It was a roller coaster of love."
"We agreed to grow old together, and one day, maybe live together with all our girlfriends," she continued. "Well, we never got to live together, but we did grow older together. Who knows… maybe in the next life. Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I’m going to miss the hell out of you. My heart goes out to your beautiful children, Dex and Duke. I love you."
