Siwa came out in January 2021, before appearing on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" in February and revealing she had a girlfriend. She also said her girlfriend was the one who encouraged her to go ahead and own her truth. "If I lost everything that I've created because of being myself and because of loving who I want to love, I don't want it," she told Jimmy. "That's not what I want if I can't love who I want to love; that's one of the most important things to me."

In January, Siwa revealed out her parents reacted to her coming out. "You know what my dad said?" He said, 'Hey man, love is universal.' My parents have known. My mom said she's known for the last two years,'" she explained. "She was like, 'About two years ago I was like yeah, I don't think you only like boys and that's totally okay.'" Her brother simply told her, "Sick -- proud of you."
