After near universal acclaim and joining the $1 billion box office club, it comes as no surprise that "Black Panther" absolutely dominated the MTV Movie & TV Awards nominations that were unveiled Thursday morning.
These awards have always been much hipper than either the Oscars or the Emmys, which also explains why "Stranger Things" was the clear leader on the television side.
Tiffany Haddish Promises to Pay Kevin Hart Back the $300 He Gave Her When She Was Homeless -- On One Condition
View StoryChadwick Boseman's star-making blockbuster earned seven total nominations, including "Best Movie," "Villain" (for Michael B. Jordan's tortured Killmonger) and "Fight." Boseman himself earned two nods; one for "Best Performance in a Movie," and he countered Jordan's "Best Villain" with a "Best Hero" nomination.
"Panther" takes on franchise partner "Avengers: Infinity War" for "Best Movie," alongside "Girls Trip," "It" and "Wonder Woman." Fellow Disney powerhouse film "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" was shut out of the big award, but received nominations for Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver's work.
On the comedy side, Tiffany Haddish continues to have a great year. MTV doesn't break down down acting categories by gender. So in a way, these nominations mean even more as the field is far more competitive. And Haddish broke through again with nods for "Best Comedic Performance" and "Scene Stealer" for her work on "Girls Trip" (and she had to compete against TV as well in those categories).
Speaking of television, "Stranger Things" takes on fellow Netflix series "13 Reasons Why," as well as "Game of Thrones," "grown-ish" and "Riverdale" for "Best Show." The creepy smash hit also earned nominations for Millie Bobby Brown's tortured performance as Eleven, "Best Kiss," "Best Team" and "Most Frightened Performance."
Check out all the nominees below, and join Tiffany Haddish as she celebrates her own nominations while hosting the broadcast of the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Monday, June 18 at 9 p.m. ET.
