The movie looks all sorts of weird and terrifying, loaded with a killer performance from Gyllenhaal.
Move over "Bird Box," Netflix has another wild thriller on the way, and it's already a hit with cinephiles.
On Thursday, the streaming service dropped a horrifying trailer for their new film "Velvet Buzzsaw." It's described as a "satirical thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce." However, it seems to be much more than that.
'Daily Show' Issues 'Bird Box' Challenge for R. Kelly Fans Who Can't Stop Listening to 'Ignition'
View StoryThe trailer begins with Jake Gyllenhaal's quirky art critic character, Morf Vandewalt, as he maneuvers his day-to-day job of judging pieces of art in galleries. Things take a turn when Vandewalt's friend Josephina (Zawe Ashton) discovers creepy, yet enticing paintings from a dead neighbor. After contemporary art gallery big wig Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo) sees this as a financial opportunity, the art is then debuted to the public but at a deadly cost.
People who come in contact with the paintings learn that the art has some strange and horrific properties, as it has come to life. The trailer shows flashes of beings coming out of the paintings and attack those who look at it. It's all havoc from there as the art seems to bring terror and catastrophe.
"There is some sort of power, some spirit, it's connected to his art," Vanderwalt says. "Something truly, god damn strange is going on!"
"Velvet Buzzsaw" reunites Gyllenhaal with "Nightcrawler" writer-director Dan Gilroy, and also stars Natalia Dyer, John Malkovich, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette and Tom Sturridge.
Film Twitter was immediately hooked, as movie fans were talking about it so much this morning that it was a trending topic.
