Showtime, Synergy!
Jerrica Benton is back in the film adaptation of "Jem and the Holograms," which looks very different from its '80s cartoon source material.
The original told the story of a young woman who's transformed into a pop star thanks to a pair of earrings that project a hologram over herself. If it sounds like a ridiculous premise, it is ... but the trailer for the film is surprisingly toned down.
Instead of looking like a total campfest, it looks more like a teenage "Dreamgirls," with Jerrica and her friends getting discovered after a video of her sporting a disguise goes viral on YouTube.
They get Gaga-worthy makeovers from a record studio, but it's clear "Jem" is the real star -- and jealousy starts to break the girls apart.
Keep an eye out for Rio (the hunky Ryan Guzman), a potentially villainous Juliette Lewis and Audrey Peeples touching a pair of glowing earrings while saying the magic words: Showtime, Synergy.
While it's unclear how Synergy will actually appear in the film, there's something else missing from the trailer: The Misfits!
The Holograms' enemies are nowhere to be seen -- but toofab's Brian Particelli recently chatted with producer Jason Blum, who hinted they may pop up.
"I can't tell you that, [but] I can tell you the chances are very good," he said with a maniacal laugh. "You're gonna love the movie. I'm in love with the movie. It so hits the theme of what the series hits, it's f**king great."
We'll see for sure when the film hits theaters October 23.
