Aaron Carter is taking it one day at a time.
The brother of Nick Carter opened up about his struggles with depression and substance abuse during a new interview with Oprah for Saturday's "Where Are They Now" special on OWN.
During the candid conversation, Carter revealed that he first dealt with depression after his parents got divorced back in 2003.
"The depression was brought on because I loved my family being together," he explained on the show. "I did not want to see them divorced. I couldn't dwell on it. I couldn't think about it too much. I kind of had to just block it out."
The now-28-year-old ended up moving in with his big bro Nick in Tennessee, where he eventually got a call from "Dancing with the Stars" producers asking him to come on the show.
While it seemed like everything was turning around for the former pop star, record labels were still hesitant to work with Carter.
"They just were not interested in me," he confessed. "They didn't want to touch me, they didn't want to do anything… Nothing ever came into fruition."
That's when things took a turn for the worst, and Aaron started drinking ... a ton.
"I started getting really heavy into drinking and was telling people, 'I'm on a real bad path right now. I need help,'" he explained, before revealing that he checked into the Betty Ford Center the very next month in 2011.
Carter says he's been sober ever since.
