"Ocean's 8" follows a whole new gang of likable criminals, but they're up to the same old shenanigans in the first trailer that dropped Tuesday.
And it's no wonder, with an Ocean at the helm.
Sandra Bullock takes center stage in "Ocean's 8" as Debbie Ocean, estranged sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean ("Ocean's 11-13"). Fresh out of jail, she's got her own heist to plan. Bullock is joined by an all-female crew of Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina, while Anne Hathaway sits as their target, wearing a $150 million dollar necklace at the Met Gala ball.
Julia Roberts and James Corden Act Out Her Film Career In 9 Hilarious Minutes
View StoryThe jokes come fast and furious in this trailer, with Rihanna revealing that her real name isn't Nine Ball (it's Eight Ball), and Kaling wondering why they can't just go to the Gala after she sees Taylor Swift. The tone teases a fun and fast-paced caper comedy that should go down easy as a summer popcorn flick.
"Why do you need to do this?" Blanchett asks Bullock, who's fresh out of jail after promising to go straight and have a simple, normal life.
"'Cause it's what I'm good at," she responds. Later, James Corden asks if the whole family is like this. "Literally," she responds. The connection by name and the periodic references to the Ocean family vocation really makes it seem likely Danny just might make a surprise cameo.
'A Wrinkle in Time' Full Trailer Is Everything We Never Knew We Wanted
View StoryWhat's good to see, aside from lots of slick production and very cool heist elements, is the chemistry among the cast. The success of the "Ocean's" reboot last time was in the charming camaraderie of its cast of all-stars, so it's good to see this re-reboot offering more of the same. We've already started thinking of the powerhouse female actresses we want to see in the inevitable "Ocean's 9," and yes we're looking at you, all female "Ghostbusters!"
"Ocean's 8" hits theaters June 8th.
