With Halloween right around the corner, we're counting down the days by posting five fun facts about our favorite fright flicks.
Today's featured film is the original, Wes Craven-directed "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984).
1. Charlie Sheen was interested in the role of Glen, but the producers say they couldn't afford to pay him. The role went to a then-unknown actor named Johnny Depp.
2. In the original script, Freddy Kreuger was a child molester. His role was changed to a child murderer to avoid accusation of exploiting a series of child molestations in California around the time of production.
3. Freddy's signature sweater was inspired by DC hero Plastic Man's costume. In an interview with Cinefantastique, Wes Craven revealed he chose the colors red and green after he read a 1982 article in Scientific American that said the two most clashing colors to the human retina were those particular shades of green and red. Freddy's hat was inspired by one worn by a drunk who creeped out Craven as a child.
4. The special effects make-up artist based Freddy's look upon photographs of burn victims he saw from the UCLA Medical Center.
5. Throughout the filming process, over 500 gallons of fake blood were used. The gooey stairs that Nancy (Heather Lagenkamp) ran up were made of glue and oatmeal.
