Season 3 of "The Walking Dead' wrapped up on Sunday, with the long-awaited battle between Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) group and The Governor's (David Morrissey).
In the end, a major character died, and the survivors' lives were irrevocably changed. Warning, this recap covers the final episode of the season, "Welcome to the Tombs."
The episode started with The Governor beating and stabbing Milton (Dallas Roberts), bringing him to the brink of death, and imprisoning him with Andrea (Laurie Holden) for both their betrayals.
The Governor then led the heavily armed Woodbury militia to the prison. The stormed the gates, taking out several towers. After discovering the prisoner seemingly deserted, they descended into "the tombs."
Rick's group smoked out the militia using grenades, and as they fled Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn (Steve Yeun) shot at them. Jody (Tanner Holland), a Woodbury teen, stumbled across Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Hershel (Scott Wilson) while fleeing, but Carl shot him in the head as he was surrendering.
The Governor, angered by the militia's cowardice, opened fire and massacred his own people. He drove away with his two surviving lieutenants. After securing the prison, Rick, Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) decided to take the fight to Woodbury. Along the way they discovered what The Governor had done, and a sole survivor, Karen.
At the gates of Woodbury, Karen explained to Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) what happened. They found Andrea's holding cell, and discovered she had killed the zombified Milton.
Unfortunately, Andrea was bitten in the process, and asked for Rick's gun so she could kill herself before she turned. In the end, she ended her own life, with Michonne cradling her as Andrea did to her sister Amy back in Season 1.
The surviving Woodbury residents, mostly elderly and children, were then brought to the prison -- their new home. The Governor whereabouts remained unknown.
All season long we were promised an epic battle between the two groups ... and this finale was a bit of a let down in that sense. Clearly, the show runners want to keep The Governor around as the main antagonist next season, but was this a wise move?
Also, while Andrea was a mostly infuriating character on the show, she's a total badass in the comics ... and is still around now. Was it too early to kill her off?
