Pura Vida bracelets are popular among the celebrity set -- Robert Downey Jr., David Beckham, Rob Kardashian and Rihanna, to name a few -- but the story behind them is much more humble.
During a trip to Costa Rica, friends Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman met Jorge and Joaquin, two men peddling string bracelets. Griffin and Paul asked the men if they would be willing to make 400 bracelets for them to take back to the California.
The bracelets quickly became a hit and demand for them grew. Griffin and Paul formed Pura Vida (Spanish for "pure life"), employing Jorge, Joaquin and other local Costa Ricans. Today, they create over 20,000 bracelets a week, which are sold in 2,500 surf shops, boutiques, select retailers and online.
Not only does Pura Vida support 30 artisans full-time, the company also gives back to the environment. For every Pura Vida Bracelet sold, they donate 1% back to The Surfrider Foundation through 1% for the Planet.
