New director, totally new direction.
The first trailer for "Star Trek Beyond" dropped this morning, and wow, does it look completely different from the past two films from director J.J. Abrams. With J.J. busy on "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Fast & Furious" director Justin Lin steps behind the lens for the latest Captain Kirk outing -- and his influence is very apparent in the new sneak peek.
This trailer is packed with frantic action and a ton of humor, setting a different overall tone for the upcoming flick. Remember how serious the trailers for "Star Trek Into Darkness" were, with Benedict Cumberbatch's creepy narration? Well, that's been replaced with the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage."
Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban all return for the third film -- and are joined by Idris Elba and "Kingsman" standout Sofia Boutella, both seen above sporting heavy makeup and prosthetics.
What do you think of the first look? Sound off below. "Star Trek Beyond" hits theaters July 22, 2016.
