'Stranger Things' Star Shannon Purser Comes Out As Bisexual After Backlash Over 'Riverdale' Tweets

The 19-year-old actress tweeted an emotional message to her fans Tuesday evening after a now-deleted tweet about “Riverdale's” Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge kissing sparked backlash on Twitter.

“I don't normally do this, but I figure now is as good a time as any to get personal. I've only just recently come out as bisexual to my family and friends,” Purser wrote in posting.

“It's something I am still processing and trying to understand and I don't like talking about it too much. I'm very very new to the LGBT community,” she added. “I have never ever wanted to alienate anyone. It wasn't a wise or kind thing to say and I'm disappointed in myself, especially as a Christian who has always been taught to speak love to others.”

Purser came under fire on social media after she expressed disappointment that the writers were queerbaiting Beronica Shippers with a same-sex kiss between portrayers Camilla Mendes and Lili Reinhart. But Purser later clarified she was just trying to make a point about people not being hateful towards others who have differences of opinion.

She concluded: “I apologize to those who were hurt.”
