'Game of Thrones' Player of the Week: Dragon Killer Unleashed as War Comes to King's Landing

Halfway through the episode, the most action we'd seen was Arya and Brienne sparring. When they had their blades at each other's throats, I could hear them both saying, “Did we just become best friends?!”

But finally all the waiting culminated in the biggest on-screen skirmish we've seen since the Battle of the Bastards. Jaime got the Tyrell gold into King's Landing before Dany arrived, but the provisions were not so lucky. Barrels of grain are very, very flammable.

There is no question that Dany is the player of the week, even though she made a tactical error in overconfidence when she confronted Bronn and the dragon crossbow head on. After seeing the first spear fly over her shoulder, she saw the threat that was presented to her, and was right that she needed to address it, but flying head on may not have been her wisest course.

Unfortunately for Cersei, Bronn's aim was off and the dragon and its rider survived the encounter. Not so much her wonderful weapon. Hopefully Qyburn has a few more of them up his sleeve, or he can build them quickly.

Perhaps the best thing about this battle happening now is that it escalates the human conflict on this show. As Jon proved via ancient cave drawings the White Walkers are a threat to all living things and they are the real danger of the show. The “Game of Thrones” needs to come to an end so the “War for Life” can get underway, and it's looking like we're going to get things moving on the game front.

Would it be too much to ask that the “Game” end this season, leaving us all six episodes of the eighth and final season to deal with the threat to the North. It's been built up for seven years now, so it would be pretty lame to give us only an episode or two to focus on the real threat that's been looming all this time.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the episode is that no one died. There was a moment when it looked like the dragon might actually die as it wasn't Drogon, but it looks like it's just injured. Then, Jaime followed Dany's playbook and charged straight at her and the dragon in hopes of taking the lastTargaryen down like he was jousting. Dragonfire put an end to this plan, but he was saved at the last moment by Bronn … or at least it looked like Bronn.

Save for this epic battle, which was horrific and disturbing in a whole new way for the show thanks to the damage done by fire, little else happened. The Stark reunion was nice, but more weird than heartwarming as Bran is broken, and no one else really did anything at all.

Can't believe there are only three episodes left this season as “Game of Thrones” continues every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
