John Mayer has no problem admitting he's keeping tabs on his ex-girlfriend, Katy Perry.
On Monday night, friend and "Watch What Happens Live" host Andy Cohen asked Mayer if he had tuned in while the pop star recorded her day-to-day life during a 96-hour live stream over the summer. Not only did Mayer admit to watching parts of the live stream, he also said it was totally normal that he did so.
"Yeah, I checked in with it," Mayer said. "It's definitely odd to watch your ex-girlfriend sleep. But the way I see things now is like, I call it stand in the middle of the boat. If someone says, 'I don't watch that.' It's like, yes you do."
Nicki Minaj Is Saving Grace of Perry's Wacky, Tacky 'Swish Swish' Music Video
View StoryMayer went on to say it's in fact more awkward to avoid contacting your ex when you feel it's appropriate to do so.
"Text when you want to text. Watch when you want to watch. Be human about it," he said. "I texted Katy happy birthday. It was 4 in the morning. It was like a post-midnight-haven't-gone-to-sleep-yet-it's-technically-your-birthday send because how weird is it to be like, 'Well, I want to say happy birthday now, but I'm going to wait until tomorrow afternoon.' Be a person, man."
A caller then pressed Mayer about his recent Twitter flirtation with Nicki Minaj and asked if he had spoken to her since.
"No," Mayer replied. "I think that portal between two people who follow each other could be crossed by either side -- it should be respected. Two follows does not a DM relationship make, is what I'm saying. I think we're both very responsible with the membrane that connects two people who follow each other on Twitter. We're not just puncturing it just to do it. If we need each other, we know we're there."
John Mayer Is Speechless After Nicki Minaj Flirts with Him on Twitter
View StoryBack in September, Mayer tweeted, "I spend an inordinate amount of time per day wondering if Nicki Minaj would like me or not." Minaj then replied, "Would my body be your wonderland?"
Mayer told Cohen, "I spend large amounts of time wondering whether Nicki Minaj would like me or not, which at the time when I wrote it -- No. 1 it's completely authentic, and No. 2 I forgot that I was a famous person and that I would find out very quickly whether or not she would like me."
Mayer said that Minaj replied to him "in very short order" and that she was "really kind and funny" with her response.
"I was like, she wins," he said. "She wins that exchange. She spiked the ball. It was great."
