Tumblr Just Banned This and Users Are Freaking Out

Tumblr users are freaking out after the bloging social media platform announced it will no longer permit adult content.

On Monday, Tumblr CEO Jeff D'Onofrio posted a letter to the Staff Tumblr account to share the upcoming changes -- starting Dec. 17 -- for a "better, more positive" experience. The announcement comes a few weeks after CNET reported that Apple removed the Tumblr app from the App Store due to images of child sexual abuse that had slipped through the filters.

"We've realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change," D'Onofrio wrote in the letter. "Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we're taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions)."

The news of the policy change went viral Monday morning, and quickly became the top trending topic on Twitter and remained there all day. Fans suspect that the site will "die" without it's explicit content, as users openly admitted that that the microblogging website was a place that went to exclusively for this type of content. They also implied the site was best known for its NSFW accounts. And they're not wrong.

"All of the nsfw artists are basically f--ked now," a user tweeted. "Tumblr was literally like 75% nsfw shit lmfao. Bad business move."

"Twitter is about to explode once tumblr bans all adult content," another said. "I can't f--king wait."

Comedian Billy Eichner tweeted for the site to "please reconsider" their decision.

"Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" writer Mick Drucker summed it all up in one tweet. "Congratulations to Tumblr on taking a stand against the only thing people still go on Tumblr for," he wrote.

Meanwhile, Chance the Rapper was baffled that Tumblr was banning pornographic images as his Twitter feed is loaded with disturbing content.

"They banning nipples on tumblr but im seeing people get murdered graphically every day on this app," he tweeted at Twitter Support. "Like real snuff videos, non related to police shootings. Wtf yo. That shit honestly terrible for my mental and fucking up how I value human life. Help?"

It's not a secret that the microblogging and social media networking site is known for NSFW photos and other miscellaneous explicit content. TechCrunch reported back in 2013 that 11.4 percent of the 200,000 most-visited Tumblr blogs were adult content based, with 16.6 percent of all Tumblr traffic been taking place on adult blogs.

In an adult content FAQ page, Tumblr clarified what type of content will and won't be permitted starting December 2017.

All forms of "adult content" will no longer be allowed. This includes "photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts."

The page explained that the following is content that can still be posted: "Exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery. Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations."

Tumblr users took to Twitter to react to the devastating news. Some people even tweeted that some of their content has already been "flagged" as inappropriate and will be taken down.
