We're pretty sure Cole sides with Drake and takes shots at Kanye on his first single of 2019.
TooFab would like to be the first to congratulate you on surviving another week! To kick your weekend off right, here's a selection of this week's best new music.
J. Cole dropped his first single of 2019 -- "Middle Child" -- which many believe is a metaphor for what he feels is his place in hip-hop. In the song, he talks about how he "can't quit" music until all his friends are rich. (We need friends like Cole.) But even more interesting is the shot he seemingly takes at Kanye West.
Kris Jenner Gets Grilled About Kendall's Dating Life, Wedding Bells for Kylie and Travis
View Story"If I smoke a rapper, it's gon' be legit / It won't be for clout, it won't be for fame / It won't be 'cause my shit ain't sellin' the same / It won't be to sell you my latest lil' sneakers / It won't be 'cause some n---a slid in my lane," he says on the track.
Cole seems to be condemning rappers who beef with other rappers for "clout" because of a decline in their album sales, fame and/or popularity. He also mentions sneakers, and we all know who has sneakers. It all just seems to line up a little too perfectly with Ye and the ongoing feud he has with Drake.
Cole also seems to express any past issues he's had with Drake -- "back when the rap game was praying I'd diss" -- are long gone, noting Drizzy recently gifted him a Rolex. (We'd also like friends like Drake.)
