Four Tons of Marijuana Buried in Jalapeños Seized in San Diego

These peppers were so hot, they were smoking.

Almost four tons of marijuana was found buried in a shipment of Jalapeños on the US border on Thursday, in California.

Authorities at the San Diego checkpoint discovered the weed wrapped in 314 separate packages, hidden inside a tractor trailer filled with the red chilies.

"Very proud of our CBP officers in Otay Mesa!" Mark Morgan Acting commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, tweeted on Friday along with a photo of the eye-opening find.

"Last night they seized 7,560 pounds of marijuana in a shipment of jalapeno peppers and on Tuesday they seized another 10,642 pounds of marijuana in a shipment of plastic auto parts. Well done!"

The truck was driven through the port by a 37-year-old Mexican citizen; it is unclear if he knew what his true cargo was, or if he had been arrested or charged.

As Morgan pointed out, the bust came just one day after an even bigger haul of cannabis was discovered in a shipment of car parts at the same port of entry.

Although recreational marijuana is now legal in the state of California, and shops are common in larger cities, many of the smaller municipalities do not allow it.

Illegal shops are constantly being shut down, as high taxes and permit fees fuel a booming black market.
