Appearing on WWHL, she spills on the prank -- as well as whether she ever hooked up with both Simon Cowell and Keanu Reeves.
Paula Abdul was duped by Sacha Baron Cohen in his 2009 movie "Bruno," but it wasn't until months after their wild interaction that she found out what actually happened.
Appearing on "Watch What Happens Live" on Wednesday night, Abdul was asked whether she had any idea Cohen was the man behind the outrageous Austrian fashion reporter, who interviewed her at the time under the guise of presenting her the completely made-up International Artist of the Year Award.
The segment of the movie was wild, as he didn't have any furniture for either of them to sit on -- and instead used "Mexican Chair People" he grabbed from doing work around the house. When a naked man came out covered in sushi, Abdul bolted, exclaiming, "This is really bad for me."
"Not only did I have no idea. I heard I was getting International Artist of the Year Award, I'm going to show up," she recalled. "I showed up, I wanted to get that award. Some crazy freak answered the door in clear plastic pants and a jockstrap, blush on his face and a hat and I'm like, this is probably like when I go to Japan and do weird Japanese game shows."
She said her hair and makeup people, as well as her publicist, were not allowed into the interview. "When they started serving sushi on sumo wrestlers, it was time to leave," she said. "He was chasing after the award and threw the award."
Paula Abdul Reveals What Work She Had Done Before Vegas Residency
View Story"Right after that I said, 'Thank god you didn't sign any agreement and my then-publicist says, 'I had to, it's in German,'" she said of the release form, allowing them to use the footage. "Immediately I called [lawyer] Marty Singer, he tried calling numbers, disconnected."
Saying she was "on pins and needles for months" to see where the footage would drop, Abdul explained she started getting press requests from outlets who had seen press screenings of the film to know about working with Cohen. "I go, 'I've never met Sacha Baron Cohen. I haven't worked with Sacha Baron Cohen, I think he's genius but I haven't worked with him," she said.
After waking up one night at 2:00AM in a cold sweat, she had a moment of clarity, Googled herself and Cohen and figured it all out. "It was the week before the opening," she said, "I wasn't even invited!"
During her appearance on "WWHL," Abdul was also asked about whether she ever hooked up with or dated "American Idol" costar Simon Cowell and "Rush, Rush" music video star Keanu Reeves.
"I wish," she exclaimed, regarding Reeves. "I got to see him, by accident, I wanted to introduce myself to him. I hadn't met him yet. I went up to his trailer and the door was slightly opened. He had headphones on and he was air guitar-ing in his underwear. I said, that's my boyfriend."
As for Simon, that was a big no as well, as she said, "Ew!" after being asked.
Other things she revealed during the Andy Cohen sit-down: She once peed herself during a concert "on accident," has love for ABC's "American Idol" reboot and applauds Katy Perry's big payday,
Abdul's "Forever Your Girl" residency in Las Vegas continues this month with dates at the Flamingo on October 22, 24, 25 and 26. She has additional dates throughout November-January.
