Former "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee is back on TV -- but this time, she's venturing into scripted territory.
The reality TV veteran stars in "Smash," premiering tonight on NBC, where she plays a Broadway hopeful auditioning for the lead in a Marilyn Monroe musical.
While she has acted in supporting roles in movies like "The House Bunny" and "Shark Night 3D," this is her first leading role ... and NBC has a lot riding on her performance.
McPhee is hardly the first reality TV star to try their hand at acting though. Numerous stars have attempted to crossover, with results ranging from Oscar statues to Razzies.
