Selena Gomez picked up the Pop Rock Female award during the American Music Awards on Sunday night, where she gave one very powerful speech about why she left the spotlight earlier this year.
"In 2014, this stage was actually the first time I was authentically 100% honest with all of you," she started, referencing her 2014 performance where she cried on stage.
"It's safe to say most of you know a lot of my life, whether I liked it or not. I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside," she continued. "I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept to too much together to where I would let myself down."
"I don't want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what's in here. I'm not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore. All I can say, from the bottom of my heart, is I am so grateful I have the opportunity to share what I love every single day with people that I love," she added in conclusion. "I have to say thank you so much to my fans, because you guys are so damn loyal and I don't know what I did to deserve you. If you are broken, you don't have to stay broken. If you respect me or not, that's one thing you should know about me, I care about people and thank you so much for this.
Gomez stunned on the red carpet before heading inside, wearing a red ballgown that highlighted her slender figure. The "Come & Get It" singer styled her hair in a sleek pony and completed her look with smokey eyes and a nude lip.
This was Gomez's first public appearance since canceling her tour in August to focus on her health. "As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," Selena told People at the time. "I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges."
"I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off," she continued. "Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues."
It definitely looks like the 24-year-old is doing much better.
