A senior official in the Trump administration came out Wednesday as part of "the resistance" and Hollywood is thrilled, even if they don't know exactly who that senior official is.
In a rare move, The New York Times published an astonishing op-ed written by an anonymous government employee working in the Trump White House. The author of the jaw-dropping piece makes it clear they don't identify with "the popular 'resistance' of the left" and want the administration to succeed, but their message should still resonate with Trump's fiercest critics.
Michael Moore Thinks Gwen Stefani Is the Reason Donald Trump Ran for President
View Story"We believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic. That is why many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump's more misguided impulses until he is out of office," the author of the piece wrote.
The surprise op-ed also confirms what many on the left have feared: "The root of the problem is the president's amorality. Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making. Although he was elected as a Republican, the president shows little affinity for ideals long espoused by conservatives: free minds, free markets and free people. At best, he has invoked these ideals in scripted settings. At worst, he has attacked them outright."
Prolific TV producer and filmmaker Judd Apatow simply exclaimed "good lord!!" while sharing the New York Times link on Twitter, where actress Alyssa Milano and "Spinal Tap" director Rob Reiner also shared their reaction to the author's admission that "there were early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment," which gives the vice president and a majority of the sitting cabinet members the power to legally remove the president from office if they believe he's "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office."
"Donald Trump's own cabinet considered invoking the 25TH AMENDMENT TO REMOVE HIM from office and yet we are allowing him and the Republican's who support him to choose a Supreme Court Justice who believes he can pardon himself?!?!" Milano wrote. "What country is this?"
"Now we have it," Reiner tweeted. "From inside the Trump WH. Conservative Republican WH officials considered invoking 25th Amendment to remove the President from office. We're a huge step closer to seeing this national nightmare come to an end. GOP electeds, handwriting is on the wall."
According to the anonymous senior official in the White House, the 25th amendment option is no longer on the table. "No one wanted to precipitate a constitutional crisis. So we will do what we can to steer the administration in the right direction until -- one way or another -- it's over," they wrote.
