"I respect Kaitlynn and care deeply about her," he says now.
After initially joking about and mocking Kaitlynn Carter's behavior following their split, Brody Jenner is now taking the high road.
The reality TV star posted a note about their separation on Instagram on Friday, in an attempt to "set the story straight" about where the two stand now.
"There is far too much negativity being directed at someone who I love and care about very much," he wrote. "I feel the need to set the story straight. Kaitlynn and I have been best friends for 6 years, and we continue to be. We, like many others before us and many after us, grew in different directions over those same 6 years."
"Kaitlynn is a wonderful person, beautiful and fun to be with, always a positive force in my life," he continued. "We decided the best move for both of us was to keep our love for each other strong but move forward separately with our lives. I respect Kaitlynn and care deeply about her. She deserves to be able to move forward in her life with respect and happiness."
In the comments, Kaitlynn was one of the first to respond, leaving a heart emoji.
The Only Thing Kaitlynn Carter Said About Brody Jenner During First Post-Split Interview
View StoryIn case you somehow missed it, Brody and Kaitlynn split, she high-tailed it to Italy with longtime friend Miley Cyrus and they were photographed kissing. Jenner then posted a selfie on his Instagram, saying "Don't let yesterday take up too much of today." His "Hills" costar Brandon Thomas Lee then commented, "Let's round this scandal out and post a pic of us making out."
Brody replied, "Watch out! Pics of Liam and I holding hands on the beach coming soon," which didn't sit well with Miley, who replied to the comment, "Go take a nap in your truck and cool off #hotgirlsummer."
The social media situation cooled down after that, with Brody's mom Linda Thompson being the first in the Jenner clan to show Kaitlynn support.
"@kaitlynn And for the record honey, the only 'shade' I throw is my own shadow walking away from drama," Linda wrote on Carter's Instagram page. "You know I love you. I always have & always will."
Brody Jenner's Mom Supports Kaitlynn Carter After Split, Miley Cyrus Hookup
View StoryCarter also stayed away from the drama in her first interview since the split. Carter joined her "The Hills: New Beginnings" costar Whitney Port last night for a live taping of her With Whit podcast at The Grove on Thursday -- and while Port didn't ask a single thing about the Miley situation, the two did address Kaitlynn's relationship with Brody and initial reluctance to do the MTV reality show together.
"Was it a hard decision for you to decide to do the show with Brody at the time?" asked Port. "Yeah," said Carter, "We took so long to decide whether to do the show or not. Spencer approached us about it probably two years ago...And it was an automatic no."
"Also, because it wasn't really real. It was kind of Spencer throwing it out again and really that's not going to happen," she continued, "Boy was I wrong." Kaitlynn added that Whitney was actually the one who convinced her to sign on.
"So we originally thought -- I don't know -- it seemed like kind of a crazy idea for Brody to be back on TV and for me to be on there in the first place cause it's not really my comfort zone," she continued. "But then I also thought, the decision really was about whether for us we'd be able to spend more time together. Because he was always on the road DJ-ing and I was always on the road for work with Foray. And so this was like a project to do together."
"The Hills: New Beginnings" airs Mondays on MTV.
