Rumors about their relationship and lack of marriage license come to a head at Spencer and Heidi's vow renewal.
Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter laid their relationship cards on the table in the season finale of "The Hills: New Beginning," after gossip among their friends forced their hands.
While the two have since separated, rumors about whether Jenner and Carter had an open relationship and why they never made their marriage legal became major talking points in the back half of the season.
As Brody and on-again friend Spencer Pratt met up for lunch, the latter asked the former whether he was dealing with any "marriage drama," to which he replied "Absolutely not."
Spencer Claims Kaitlynn & Miley Had a 'Thing' Before Brody Split
View Story"I feel like you're living two different lives," said Pratt. "When I got married out of the country, I had to do one in America, have it be nice and legal."
After Brody and Kaitlynn tied the knot in Indonesia, they never filed paperwork in the States making it official. "Let me tell you something about marriage," Jenner told Pratt, "there's a lot of legality involved. I don't believe in the whole signing part of it. Everything else, I'm with it."
"With your situation, you can literally walk away at any time, that's gotta make her feel some type of way," Pratt prodded. "You can literally be like, bye, pack up and leave."
"That would never happen," said Jenner. "That doesn't mean that we're not married, of course we're married. We are married. We're fine with the way our marriage is set up, just perfectly set up. Thank you for your concern."
While that was the end of their conversation, the topic wasn't dead just yet. Jason Wahler's wife, Ashley Slack, had been running her mouth about their relationship as well -- and when word about her comments got back to Kaitlynn, she was not happy about it.
"Thats offensive to say we shouldn't be parents because of some random rumor about my relationship with Brody," Kaitlynn said to Mischa Barton and Frankie Delgado's wife Jen as the entire cast attended Heidi and Spencer's vow renewal ceremony. "The last thing I need is somebody weighing in on my relationship. I think it's so inappropriate. There's just no reason for her to be talking about it, that's all there is to it."
Kaitlynn later overheard Ashley talking about her even more, exclaiming, "You've gotta be f--king kidding me" before she and Brody threatened to leave the event.
'The Hills' Recap: Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter React to Open Marriage Gossip
View Story"I did not come here to gossip or do this, I came here to have a good time," said Jenner. "At this point, I'm pretty sick of people making my wife uncomfortable. It's f--king hurtful, it's disrespectful. I don't have time for that shit."
As Pratt tried to calm them both down, Kaitlynn said Ashley's assertion that Brody's been "running around with all these women" was a "huge exaggeration of reality." Jenner added, "Whatever we do behind closed doors, it's between us, it's nobody's business. We're very happy and that's all that matters, it's nobody else's business."
They ended up sticking around for the ceremony, before clearing the air with everyone about their relationship following the event.
When Ashley flat out asked if Brody ever had sex with other women, Carter said, "Not without me being involved, okay? Everything with me and Brody is under my control, let's put it that way."
Slack apologized for making Carter feel uncomfortable, before Kaitlynn opened up a little bit more in another confessional. "There's not one part of our relationship that I'm ashamed of or that I would do differently. I just think that the world isn't necessarily ready to hear about all that. Not everybody is so open-minded or like accepting of other people. But as long as what we're doing is working for us, is the most important thing."

View StoryAs for their lack of license, here's what Kaitlynn had to say about it: "Right before we went to Indonesia to get married, we started talking about getting our license here in the States, but we had a lot of like financial things that we needed to work out. We realized like, you know, we just want to focus on being excited about Indonesia and our wedding there, so let's just deal with it when we get back. But we haven't gotten around to it yet."
Speaking with Spencer, Brody echoed her statement.
"It was never something that was even a big deal that I felt like I needed to share. It was literally, we met with attorneys and shit two weeks before we left for Indonesia, went and got married in Indonesia and ever since then, we've been incredibly busy," he told Spencer. "We just haven't gotten around to doing the whole courthouse or however we're going to decide to get 'legally' married. My number one priority is making her happy and making her feel comfortable. And if she's uncomfortable, then I'm going to be uncomfortable. So like I said, whether you put it on a piece of paper or just have a celebration in Indonesia, we're married and she's my wife, and I love her to death."
In their final confessionals of the season, they both made it seem like it was nothing but smooth sailing ahead. "As long as what we're doing is working for us, that's the most important thing," said Kaitlynn.
Added Brody, "Ultimately, I'm extremely happy with my relationship with my wife and she gives me tons of freedom to be able to do whatever I want. I have nothing to complain about, life is great."
The two would later separate, with reports suggesting Carter reportedly wanted "a baby and a legal marriage" and wasn't getting either from Jenner. She has since moved on with Miley Cyrus, who split from husband Liam Hemsworth. Meanwhile, Brody has been dating Josie Canseco.
