Selena Gomez Drops New Music and Fans Are Convinced It's All About Justin Bieber

UPDATE at 8:25am PT on October 23, 2019: Hailey took to JustJared's Instagram comments to clarify that her Story showing a screenshot of Summer Walker's "I'll Kill You" was in no way a response to Gomez's song. "Please stop with this nonsense...there is no 'response.' this is complete BS.

As one might expect from social media, the moment Selena Gomez dropped new music on Tuesday night, her fans began to pick it apart to try and suss out the meaning, and they think they've got "Lose You to Love Me" cracked. In their minds, it's apparently all about Justin Bieber.

The song details a toxic relationship that the narrator -- which fans assume is Selena herself -- manages to overcome, get through and find herself stronger than ever.

In perhaps the song's most specific line, Selena sings, "In two months you replaced us like it was easy." This was enough to convince her supporters she's referring to Justin moving on from her quickly to Hailey Baldwin, whom he subsequently wed.

But they weren't content to stop with actually specific content. At another point, she sings, "Set fire to my purpose and I let it burn." Well, Justin released an album in 2015 called "Purpose." Seem like a bit of a stretch? You clearly haven't seen stans at work.

If the track is about Justin, these are some pretty harsh words. The song opens with savage lines like "Set fires to my forest / And you let it burn / Sang off-key in my chorus / 'Cause it wasn't yours" and "You got off on the hurtin' / When it wasn't yours."

Selena and Justin have had a storied and tumultuous history in the spotlight, kicking off in early 2011 when they first declared themselves official as a couple at an Oscars party. After a very public romance, Selena then called it quits in 2012, but apparently she just couldn't quit him for good.

They were rumored to be back together in 2013, but it wasn't until the following year that Justin would confirm their on-again/off-again was on again. But by the end of that year, they were off again and Justin was quickly spotted hanging out with Hailey, though he denied any romance in that relationship ... at least not yet. And after Selena's breakup with The Weeknd, it looked like reconciliation may be in the cards, but that didn't pan out in the end either.

"This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album," said Gomez about the song. "I thought it was important to share the music, as I know many can relate to the fact that the road to self-discovery generally comes through the scars in one's life. I want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself."

Bieber's bride went viral herself after the song dropped, when she shared a screenshot of Summer Walker's "I'll Kill You" to her stories. Many saw that as a response to Gomez's single. An hour after Hailey's post, Selena shared a note to her Stories, thanking Jesus for giving her strength. "See the enemy keeps trying to tear me down and it's just not gonna happen. Not today. Not the next ..." she wrote. Again, fans thought the posts were linked.

Gomez, however, did get some love from bestie Taylor Swift, who praised the song on her Instagram Stories, writing, "This song is a perfect expression of healing and my absolute favorite song she's put out yet."
