Oscar night's biggest mystery has been solved...somewhat.
After Sunday's telecast of the 89th Annual Academy Awards on ABC, accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers released a statement about the Best Picture mixup that will go down in history as one of the most shocking awards show moments.
"We sincerely apologize to 'Moonlight,' 'La La Land,' Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture," PwC said in a statement to the media. "The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred."
"We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation," the statement concluded.
"Bonnie and Clyde" stars Beatty and Dunaway presented the award for Best Picture, and after an awkward pause, Dunaway announced that "La La Land" won.

The film's producer was nearly done with his speech until a bombshell was whispered in his ear, which he then relayed to the audience: The real winner was "Moonlight." Beatty then grabbed the mic again to state that there had been a screwup in the winners' envelopes.
About the mixup, CBS CEO Les Moonves said: "I felt bad for all of the participants. 'La La Land' is a great movie, and 'Moonlight' is a great movie. They both deserved to be best picture. I wouldn't have been unhappy either way. But it's a self-inflicted wound. The accountant has one job, to hand the guy the envelope. I don't understand how something like that happens."
