Matt Damon is explaining himself ... again.
Less than two weeks after he had to speak out against some questionable comments he made about diversity in Hollywood, the actor is clarifying more remarks from a new interview.
The Internet exploded yesterday after The Guardian published a Q&A with the star of "The Martian," where he spoke about out actors.
When asked if he thought it was hard being out in Hollywood, he said many people assumed he and Ben Affleck were together when they wrote "Good Will Hunting Together" -- but he didn't want to comment on the gossip at the time because it didn't want it to seem like being gay was a "disease" he didn't have.
"I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly," he also told the publication. "But in terms of actors, I think you're a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you're straight or gay, people shouldn't know anything about your sexuality because that's one of the mysteries that you should be able to play."
A lot of websites picked up those quotes, alleging Damon was basically saying "gay actors should stay in the closet."
That didn't sit well with Ellen DeGeneres -- who says she knows Damon doesn't feel that way. Matt appeared on her show after the quotes went viral, giving him the chance to clear the air.
"I was talking about actors are more effective when you know less about their personal lives," he told the talk show host. "But in this day and age, I said this thing to The Guardian and it got turned into and I was just trying to say actors are more effective when they're a mystery. Right?"
"Somebody picked it up and said I said gay actors should get back in the closet. Which is like, I mean it's stupid, but it is painful when things get said that you don't believe," he continued. "And then it gets represented that that's what you believe, because in the blogosphere there's no real penalty for just taking the ball and running with it. Ya know what I mean? You're just trying to click on your thing."
