Gina Rodriguez Says Sorry for N-Word, Critics Slam Apology

Gina Rodriguez issued another apology late Tuesday night, this time a written statement posted to Instagram.

"In song or in real life, the words that I spoke, should not have been spoken. I grew up loving the Fugees and Lauryn Hill. I thoughtlessly sang along to the lyrics of a favorite song, and even worse, I posted it. The word I sang, carries with it a legacy of hurt and pain that I cannot imagine. Whatever consequences I face for my actions today, none will be more hurtful than the personal remorse I feel. Watching my own video playing back at me, has shaken me to my core. It is humiliating that this has to be a public lesson but it is indeed a much deserved lesson. I feel so deeply protective and responsible to the community of color but I have let this community down. I have some serious learning and growing to do and I am so deeply sorry for the pain I have caused."

Gina Rodriguez took to social media to apologize for using the N-word on Tuesday.

During an Instagram Story clip shared earlier in the day, the "Jane The Virgin" actress, 35, was getting her hair and makeup done while singing along to the Fugees' song "Ready Or Not" when she used the racial slur.

After deleting the post, Rodriguez shared a new one with an apology.

"Hey, what's up everybody, I just wanted to reach out and apologize," she said looking into the camera. "I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone by singing along to the Fugees, to a song that I love, that I grew up on. I love Lauryn Hill. And I really am sorry if I offended you."

But the damage was done and Twitter was not having it.

"what kind of whack apology -- gina rodriguez said don't worry guys I have the pass because i grew up on lauryn hill," posted one user. Another wrote, "gina rodriguez really thinks she's something with her sarcasm that was supposed to be an apology smh."

And one follower suggested this wasn't the first time the actress offended the Black community, "gina rodriguez posting a half ass apology but who's surprised?"

In 2018, critics believed Rodriguez was racially insensitive after she spoke about pay equality among minorities at a Net-A-Porter panel.

"I get so petrified in this space talking about equal pay especially when you look at the intersectional aspect of it, right? Where white women get paid more than black women, black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and it's like a very scary space to step into," she said in the interview at the time.

Members of the Black community were outraged and charged that Latina actresses have historically been payed more than black actresses, pointing to Sofia Vergara -- a Latina born in Columbia -- as the highest paid actress on television in 2018.

And a year before, Rodriguez faced backlash for her tweet following the release of "Black Panther". "Marvel and DC are killing it in inclusion and women but where are the Latinos?! Asking for a friend," she wrote. Detractors slammed her for ignoring the importance of the superhero film to the Black community.

Rodriguez, in turn, went on the "Sway in the Morning's SiriusXM" show and cried during an impassioned speech for forgiveness.

"Can't wait for mrs gina rodriguez to break down into fake tears when she gets interviewed about this," a Twitter user posted following today's incident.
