The Season 3 premiere of "Glee" aired last night, and two fresh-faced actresses stole the show.
Early in the episode, we were introduced to McKinley High student Sugar Motta, played by Vanessa Lengies. Sugar has "self-diagnosed" Asperger's syndrome, and had better one-liners than Brittany (Heather Morris). Watch as she butchers her audition for New Directions:
Our favorite Sugar one-liner of the evening came after she was rejected from the glee club. "Obviously your ears are busted because I worked that song like a stripper pole," she tells Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison). She worked it indeed!
Later in the episode, we are introduced to Harmony, played by "The Glee Project" runner-up Lindsay Pearce. Creator Ryan Murphy was always impressed by Pearce's big voice during the reality competition, likening her to star Lea Michele. He cast her perfectly as a rival to Michele's Rachel character. Check out her incredible mash-up of "Anything Goes" and "Anything You Can Do" below.
"Sooner or later I'm greater than you" she sings in Rachel's face. For Pearce to have such a featured performance in the season premiere speaks volumes about her talent and Ryan Murphy's belief in her; he's hinted she will be a factor at Sectionals. It's hard to believe Pearce was just a runner-up to winners Damian McGinty and Samuel Larsen, who will debut later in the season.
Monday's episode also marked the first appearance of Mercedes' (Amber Riley) new boyfriend Marcus, played by "Friday Night Lights'" alum LeMarcus Tinker.
The show also established who the juniors and seniors are. Rachel (Lea Michele), Finn (Cory Monteith), Kurt (Chris Colfer), and Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) are graduating, while Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Artie (Kevin McHale) are juniors -- and therefore staying beyond this season.
