Could wedding bells be coming to Mystic Falls?
"The Vampire Diaries" will end after its next season, with Warner Bros. TV releasing the sad news at Comic-Con over the weekend in San Diego. toofab sat down with the cast after the big announcement -- and everyone was just dying to know whether Stefan and Caroline will end on a happy note.
We've watched the two become best friends ... then almost something more ... before she became the unwitting surrogate for another man's witch babies, driving a wedge between them romantically. The duo finally reconnected at the end of Season 7, with more than just romance on the horizon for the final season.
"We're getting married in June, you heard it here folks!" Paul Wesley joked (maybe?) when we spoke with him. "We just keep hearing about this marriage in June and we don't know what's going on. We're just gonna go with it."
Fans have long been clamoring for springtime nuptials, a reference to Caroline saying "We're planning a June wedding" about Stefan in the very first episode of the show.
"You're gonna wear a powder blue tux," joked King, "I'll wear an orange dress." "Absolutely, like 'Dumb and Dumber,'" added Paul.
The two weren't exactly giving Steroline shippers much hope ... and series creator Julie Plec was just as much of a tease.
"We start the season in the fall, so that we can be celebrating Christmas by Christmas," she told us. "We'll just have to see by February if we get to June. I make no promises."
Plec did add that the couple has "an opportunity to try to be happy, even though things around them are so chaotic and distressing," adding that the two "need each other now more than ever."
But even if they do say "I do," could Klaus still be in the picture somewhere further down the line?
"It's absolutely possible. Without making promises that I can't deliver on, Klaus did say he's 'the first love of your life, I intend to be your last,'" she explained. "A lot has happened between that statement and the end of this show and a lot more will happen before the end of 'The Originals,' but it's not something we have forgotten. Whether we'll deliver on it or not, I can't say, but we are very much aware that that exists out there."
"My hope is 'The Originals' keeps going and going and going and we might see some of these characters end up over there some day," she added, while conceding that there are no crossovers planned for Season 8.
Wedding aside, Wesley has another, much darker ending in mind for his character.
"I kind of want Stefan and Damon to walk off into the sun rise without their rings on," he told us in closing. Think he's joking? Check out the video above!
