Lamar Odom has revealed he used a prosthetic penis to pass a drug test to play in the 2004 Olympics.

In an excerpt from the former NBA star's new memoir "Darkness to Light," obtained by People, Odom recalls the drastic measures he took to "beat" the test in order to be able to carry out one of the "biggest honors" of his career: a spot on the U.S. Men's Olympic basketball team.

The athlete, who was living in Los Angeles at the time, was using drugs every day and knew he would fail the test.

"The joy of being named to the twelve-man roster quickly turned to anxiety when Olympic officials informed me that I would have to pass a drug test before officially joining the team," Odom writes, adding he received a "call from USA Basketball that a drug tester would be coming to my house in a few days to administer the screening."

"There was absolutely no way I was going to pass," he continues. "I'd been smoking weed every day that summer. Panic set in."

Odom took the matter into his own hands and even recruited his drug-free trainer to help.

"We started googling 'fake penises' and studied different ways to beat a drug test," he writes. "After an exhaustive search we ordered a giant, rubber, black c--k to arrive the next day."

When the tester arrived at the NBA champion's home, Odom had his drug-trainer "urinate into the reservoir of the phallus, which was hidden in the balls," he writes.

"[Odom's trainer] handed me the rubber penis and left the bathroom as I strapped it on," Odom explains. "I unzipped my pants and carefully slid the fake penis through the zipper hole. To get the pee to come out of the tip, I had to squeeze the shaft repeatedly."

Odom recalls being "paranoid" his plan wouldn't work, but he ended up passing the test using his trainer's urine. He writes, "He stuck a thermometer in the cup to gauge the temperature...satisfied that the pee was mine, said 'Welcome to Team USA.'"

The former professional athlete's sex and drug addiction, including his near-fatal overdose in 2015, and how it affected his relationship to ex-wife Khloe Kardashian is also documented in his new memoir.

"Darkness to Light" is out May 28.
