Late-Night Applauds Cardi B's Shutdown Shoutout, Slams Trump's Petty Pelosi Grounding

Even though the government remains shut down, there's still plenty of political shenanigans to keep the late-night hosts busy, including Cardi B slamming Trump and Trump grounding Nancy Pelosi's flight in retaliation.

The "Bodak Yellow" rapper took to Instagram on Wednesday night to blast the government shutdown, and Trump forcing government employees to return to work without pay, just hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested he postpone his State of the Union Address citing security limitations during the shutdown.

While Trump has not responded to the rapper, he quickly shot back at Pelosi both exposing and canceling a planned trip she was set to take today to Afghanistan to visit the troops and meet with NATO allies. But don't worry, she could still go on her "public relations" trip if she wanted to fly commerical.

Stephen Colbert and James Corden were shocked but also totally not shocked by this petty retaliation while Jimmy Kimmel and Trevor Noah were hopeful that maybe the answer to all of our problems has been in front of us the whole time, most recently seen twerking in her new music video called ... ahem ... "Twerk."

Jimmy Kimmel had a hard time trying to make sense of Trump suggesting that Pelosi just catch a commercial flight to the middle of a war zone. Does Travelocity book those flights?

"And he sent the letter less than an hour before she was supposed to leave," Kimmel added. "It was the presidential equivalent of, 'You break up with me? I break up with you!'"

It all just reeks of pettiness, no matter what you think of Pelosi's letter, which had its fair share of cattiness as well. Even ardent Trump supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham had to admit he was disappointed with both actions.

To Kimmel's surprise, one voice cut through the noise clearer than any other. "A lot of people are trying to make sense out of this, but the clearest voice on the subject so far, believe it or not, came from Cardi B," he said before playing a snippet of Cardi's rant against the shutdown.

"Cardi B is right," he concluded.

Over on "The Daily Show," Trevor Noah was absolutely stoked about Cardi's outspoken comments, as were several other celebrities who heaped praise upon her through social media.

"That is the most amazing thing ever. That is so dope," he said after playing his own clip from Cardi's commentary. "How cool would it be if Cardi B somehow ended the shutdown? Like we find out that Trump is a major fan because 'Bodak Yellow' is his favorite song and also the color of his hair."

Alas, Trump has not responded to Cardi, though Trevor has a theory on that. According to the comedian, the president spent hte last two days "learning how to write, I assume" in order to respond to Pelosi's request to postpone the State of the Union.

And he absolutely loved-which-means-abhorred Trump's suggestion that Peloso fly commercial. "You could tell Trump said it like it was the worst thing he could think of," he pointed out.

He then echoed Graham and many other politician's sentiments, saying, "Nancy's letter was a little bit snarky, but it's crazy that Trump's GPS never takes him onto the high road. 'Cause he's just like, 'Okay Nancy, you want to play? Well you're messing with the queen bitch now."

Stephen Colbert tried a little bait and switch regarding Trump's response to Pelosi's SOTU request. "Clearly the president considered the chaos and the dysfunction he has brought upon our government and the solemnity of the state of the union and cooler heads prevailed," he said. But he couldn't maintain the ruse.

He could just picture Trump's thought process behind cancelling Pelosi's trip so abruptly: "If I can't get my wall to keep people out of the country, you don't get to leave the country. Sorry Nancy, no living it up in Afghanistan for you."

He also couldn't help but note that this was a supposedly top-secret flight, as Pelosi is third in line for the presidency and was heading into a war zone. Nevertheless, Trump exposed the trip and then suggested she could still go if she wanted to.

"So basically what Trump's letter said was, 'Nancy, feel free to go commercial now that I've told the Taliban that you're coming and staying at the Jalalabad La Quinta Inn.'"

James Corden found a potential root cause for the presidential response. "Obviously Trump was really irritated by Pelosi's letter, so we now know one of the side effects of excessive tanning," he said. "Very thin skin."

He went on to say, "I understand his letter began with, 'Oh yeah, well guess what?'"

This petty bickering between Pelosi and Trump is likely just beginning to get ugly and frustratingly immature. After all, Pelosi has barely been in control of the House for a month and look where we are. At this rate, we predict ugly notes being passed in class by spring and a full-blown fight behind the big slide during recess by early summer at the latest.

Maybe Cardi B can ref that.
